Week 1 Blog: Illegal to Pay Ransom?

A New York Senator introduced a bill that would prohibit government entities from paying ransom against cyber attacks. The aim is to make it clear to cyber criminals that the government will not pay, and hopefully provide a deterrent against attacking critical government infrastructure since there won’t be any profit to be made. The bill came after Albany Internation Airport paid a ransom to cyber criminals after it was hit with ransomware on Christmas Day of 2019.
